چکیده

Continuous exposure to low doses of persistent organic pollutant (POPs), such as those occurring in the general population, might contribute burden type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, evidences from longitudinal studies are scarce. We aimed explore associations accumulated POP with development T2DM by means 1) 16-year incidence disease, and 2) complementary cross-sectional analyses markers glucose homeostasis at recruitment. Organochlorine pesticide polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations were analyzed adipose tissue samples incident cases retrieved clinical records. Homeostatic model assessment values insulin sensitivity/resistance ?-cell function recruitment calculated. Linear Cox-regression models performed. In individuals normal weight/overweight (n = 293), we observed positive dose–response relationships between studied POPs risk, particularly for hexachlorobenzene (HCB) [hazard ratio (HR): 3.96 4th quartile versus 1st (Q1); confidence interval (CI) 95%: 0.79, 19.71]. PCB-180 showed a but seemingly non-linear association risk [HR 3er (Q3) Q1: 6.48; CI 0.82, 51.29]. Unadjustment body mass index considerably increased magnitude associations. study 180), HCB inversely associated sensitivity positively resistance parameters. Our results suggest that higher specific may disrupt homeostasis, possibly contributing increase especially non-obese adults.

Persistent organic pollutants as risk factors for type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major and fast growing public health problem. Although obesity is considered to be the main driver of the pandemic of T2DM, a possible contribution of some environmental contaminants, of which persistent organic pollutants (POPs) form a particular class, has been suggested. POPs are organic compounds that are resistant to environmental degradation through ch...

Resveratrol attenuates visfatin and vaspin genes expression in adipose tissue of rats with type 2 diabetes

Objective(s): Visfatin and vaspin are secreted by adipose tissue and play key roles in glucose homeostasis and subsequently are potential targets for diabetes treatment. Resveratrol (RVS) corrects insulin secretion and improves insulin sensitivity. We investigated the RVS effects on serum antioxidants, insulin and glucose levels, also visfatin and vaspin genes expression in adipose tissue of st...

Toxicological Function of Adipose Tissue: Focus on Persistent Organic Pollutants

BACKGROUND Adipose tissue (AT) is involved in several physiological functions, including metabolic regulation, energy storage, and endocrine functions. OBJECTIVES In this review we examined the evidence that an additional function of AT is to modulate persistent organic pollutant (POP) toxicity through several mechanisms. METHODS We reviewed the literature on the interaction of AT with POPs...
